Create Exchange Mailbox for Alternate Domain

Create the user account and mailbox

  1. Open the Exchange ADUC
  2. Right-click on the “Exchange - domain” OU and select “Create New User”
  3. Type the person's first name
  4. Do not type a Initials
  5. Type the person's last name
  6. Append the “ (domain)” to the end of their full name
  7. For the User's “domain” part of the their full name, type the domain's three letter abbreviation:
    • “EXP” for example.com
    • “AEX” for anotherexample.com
  8. Finish the User Logon Name with the domain abbreviation and a dash followed by their Active Directory ID
    • Examples:
      • For Julian Easterling in the example.com domain: EXP-JULIANE
      • For Bill Shelley in the anotherexample.com domain: AEX-BILLS
  9. Click the Next Button
  10. Enter a complex password (4 of the 4) and at least 15 characters since these password will not be changed that often… The user doesn't really need to know the password since they will be accessing the mailbox via their main Outlook Profile. DO NOT CHECK “Password never expires”. We will have to change these password every 6 months (or 12 months). Uncheck the “User must change password at next logon”
  11. Click the Next Button
  12. Make sure that the “Create an Exchange mailbox” checkbox is checked.
  13. Change “Alias” to “firstname.lastname”
  14. Click the Next Button
  15. Click the Finish Button

Add permissions for Active Directory ID to access mailbox

  1. In Exchange ADUC, right-click on the user object and select Properties
  2. Click on the “Exchange Advanced” tab, then the “Mailbox Rights” button.
  3. Click the “Add” button, type the Active Directory ID of the user, then click OK
  4. Check “Read permissions”
  5. Check “Full mailbox access”
  6. Uncheck any other checkboxes
  7. Click OK
  8. Click Ok to exit user properties
